The Catalyst 4948 is a fixed configuration Data centre switch with 48 wire-speed 10/100/1000 links and either 4x1GE or 2x10GE uplinks. Furthermore, the 4948 is the only Cisco desktop series switch to allow dual hot-swappable power supplies and fan trays.

[edit] Architecture

The 4948 is based on the Catalyst 4500. However, due to the decreased size, many of the design limitations are absent, as each port group is split in to 6gbps traces. Therefore, with 8 main traces and an additional supervisor-based trace for the 10GE, line-rate performance is obtained.

[edit] Comparison of 3750

The 4900 series can be compared to the 3750 and 3750-E and the positioning somewhat similar in many cases. The 4900 is really focussed on Data centre where the rich features of the 4500 are needed with line-rate speeds in a compact chassis. Generally, one would be advised to go to a 6500 if modularity was needed.
